ATTEMPTED CYBER ATTACK ON TESCO PLC

On Saturday 23rd October 2021 customers of Tesco PLC (UK and NI) discovered that they were unable to place online orders, either through the Company website or through the company software application platforms. Customers were also unable to track previously placed orders for various commodities.

The disruption was due to an attempted cyberattack on the Tesco PLC website and the associated app resulting in customers of Britain’s largest grocer being unable to place online orders. Thankfully the attempted cyber-attack was discovered swiftly be Tesco PLC, online services were restored by Sunday 24th October 2021.

This latest attempted cyber attack on the Retail Sector, illustrates how attractive Retail is to the cyber criminal. Considering the volume, and categories of customer personal information collected and processed by Tesco PLC and retail contemporaries, they are certainly thought as “rich pickings”.   This incident also serves as a reminder to ensure and the ability to demonstrate that IT infrastructure security controls are up to date.
